Luis Felipe Edwards

The history of Viña Luis Felipe Edwards (LFE) dates back to 1976, when Luis Felipe Edwards Sr. purchased the Fundo San José de Puquillay estate, located in the Colchagua Valley, a premier viticultural region in Chile. The estate sits nestled in a secluded horseshoe-shaped valley, separated from the majestic snow-capped Andes by the smaller San Fernando ridge. At that time, it was planted with 60 hectares of vines dating back from the beginning of the 20th century, consisting mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Carmenere and Merlot. In the early Nineties, Luis Felipe Sr. decided to make wine under his own name and so built a modern winery equipped with the latest state of the art technology. The first vintage, Luis Felipe Edwards Cabernet Sauvignon 1994, was launched on the international market in late 1995 and is still drinking well to this day, a testament to the level of quality of LFE wines since day one. Viña Luis Felipe Edwards has since grown to be the largest 100% family-owned wine company in Chile, with 1850 hectares of estate vineyards and is exported to more than 100 countries; two generations are actively involved in keeping the brand synonymous with quality and traditional family values. Luis Felipe Sr. is an integral part in the company, and his son, Luis Felipe Edwards Jr., is the Managing Director. Also working in the management of the company are his daughter, Bernardita Edwards- Production Manager, one of his other sons, Ignacio Edwards- Commercial Director America, and two of his sons in law, Nicolas Bizzarri- Director of Winemaking and Eugenio Cox- Vineyard Manager. The original estate in Puquillay has been transformed into a modern day production facility, where all winemaking and bottling activities take place. The original plantings of 60 hectares has increased to 390 , and extend up into the hills at heights of 900 meters above sea level, the highest vineyard plantations in Colchagua. We have also acquired and planted estate vineyards in Leyda and Maule Valleys, and in the Colchagua Valley coast. Viña LFE has been awarded trophies and medals from some of the most prestigious competitions around the world, and was recognized as “New World Producer of the Year” by Sommelier Wine Awards (2016) and “Chilean Producer of the Year” by both the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) (2012) and AWC Vienna International Wine Challenge (2012, 2013, 2014). Each glass of LFE wine captures our family values of tradition, meticulous care, and the commitment to high quality. We are constantly evaluating and investing- including finding the best terroirs and vines for our vineyards, selecting the best personnel and equipment, and researching the latest in technology- all to ensure that each Luis Felipe Edwards wine is of only the highest quality. Since its foundation, Viña Luis Felipe Edwards has focused on producing wines of the highest quality, achieved by utilizing the best technology, while maintaining the time-tested traditional processes. To that end, we count on our people’s commitment to produce the best wine, based on knowledge, respect for the environment, and the passion to always strive to achieve the best quality. It is important to mention that a large part of our staff has stayed from the origins of our vineyard, continuing to keep alive and current the legacy of delivering unique experiences. The workers in our vineyards and winery are fundamental to the spirit of the company, its history, and its traditions. As we have grown over the years, we have recruited the best people from Chile and from around the world and are proud that we now have a truly international senior management team working towards our goal of continual improvement. In the case of our wine production, this means constant evaluation and investment in every step of the process- from finding the best terroirs and vines for our vineyards, to selecting the best personnel and technology- all to ensure that each Luis Felipe Edwards wine is of only the highest quality. The Luis Felipe Edwards winery and groundbreaking hilltop vineyards are located at our original Fundo San Jose de Puquillay estate, in the internationally-recognized Colchagua Valley, in the heart of Chile’s central valley, two hours southwest from Santiago, the country’s capital city. Our Winery The LFE production complex includes four separate wineries and temperature controlled production building and barrel room. Some people say it is difficult to find us; we like to consider ourselves as a secret garden, hidden in the heart of the valley. All winemaking and bottling activities take place at our estate. At the heart of our complex is the original atmospheric old cellar, with its magnificent chandeliers and collection of vintage horse-drawn carriages, it was designed and built along traditional Chilean lines using local materials. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and lush natural vegetation. Part of this cellar has been converted into a winery within a winery, and is fully dedicated to our icon wines. Ninety small capacity stainless steel open-top fermenters, a manual sorting table and traditional vertical press were among the equipment installed. In addition to the original winery facade are three other winery buildings, with both stainless steel and cement tanks of varying sizes and the latest in technology, such as thermo flash vinification, electrodyalisis for tartrate stabiization, tangential flow filtration, a fully equiped laboratory, VinWizard temperature control on the tanks, centrifugation, basket press, fully equiped sampling lab, and three treatment plant cascade. The production building includes 5 bottling lines, and the capacity to bottle between 2,500 – 10,000 bottles per hour, at full capacity. Our Vineyards We own 1,850 hectares of prime vineyard land, in a number of different locations that benefit from ideal microclimates for growing wine grapes. The Colchagua Valley, a relatively warm region internationally recognised for producing some of Chile’s finest red wines, is the basis of our vineyard holdings: comprising of the San Jose de Puquillay Estate in Nancagua – which incorporates the LFE900 mountain vineyards, the highest vineyard plantations in Chile, the Santa Juana Estate nearby and the Santa Bernardita de Pupilla Estate in Palmilla. Some 100 kilometres northwest, in the Leyda Valley on the Pacific Ocean coastline, is our Marea de Leyda estate, characterized by cool coastal vineyards that are ideal for the production of top quality white wines and cooler climate Pinot Noir and Syrah. In the Maule Valley, we own 400 hectares of vineyards. Most recently, during 2012, LFE acquired 750 hectares in Pumanque, located in the Colchagua Coast region, where plantations have started and will be completed in 2014. We plan to continue growing, and should double our plantations in the medium term. The family tradition of a great winery, not only shines because of its achievements, but also for reinventing itself in time. With more than 25 years of meticulous work, we focus day to day on quality production with the best technology, in compliance with the highest international standards, and the goal of delivering a memorable experience with every bottle of LFE wine.
